Galician history and culture: the artistic avant-garde of Celtic Ceramics in Pontecesures

Galician ceramic industry

The ceramic industry in Galicia underwent a before and after in the production of its pieces. In 1925, Ramón Diéguez Carlés acquired the company Cerámica Artística Gallega, which was directly linked to its owner’s desire to capture traditional Galician culture in his designs.

In the early years, the production of Celtic ceramics included the creation of handmade and decorative pieces, as well as everyday items. They used novel techniques such as glazing and colors, thus acquiring a reputation. That is, over the years, the company’s production had shifted from the turning process to the glazing technique. However, with the arrival of the Spanish Civil War and the subsequent dictatorship, the future of the factory was marked, where, driven by a suffocating climate for culture, the production and manufacture of everyday objects was shifted.
